New distribution centre to be opened by Southend Foodbank Posted On 29 January 2021

The new distribution centre will be opened at Eastwood Baptist Church in Leigh, to help with Southend Foodbank’s productivity

Having opened last Wednesday (20th January), the new distribution centre is planned to operate between the hours of 09:00 – 11:00. Southend and Rochford Borough already boast six other distribution centres, running currently. Presently training to be a minister at Eastwood Baptist Church, Jo Hellenbrand was the main inspiration for having the new distribution centre set up at the church.

Administrator at Southend Foodbank, Cass Francis, has said: “During 2020 we were as busy as ever, giving out 70 tons of food and feeding 6,452 people with our 3-day food parcels. We took many difficult phone calls and emails from understandably desperate people. We also made new connections with many people and organisations locally that wanted to help in some way, and we were amazed with people’s generosity and ingenuity at collecting food donations for us.

“We opened Southend Foodbank in November 2013 with an initial idea of being open three years. We have just past our 7th anniversary and we are expanding, with more warehouse space than ever before, a paid warehouse coordinator and a new distribution centre.”

Working with partner agencies in the community, Southend Foodbank has a referral voucher system, and if you wish to be referred for a foodbank voucher please contact Citizens Advice Southend on 01702 456352 or 01702 456354 to get connected with the referral process.
