Leigh commemorates Dunkirk heroes with memorial service Posted On 18 June 2021

Many attended a Dunkirk Memorial Service recently, including Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, held at St Clements Church, paying tribute to the brave heroes of Dunkirk

Marking 81 years now since the loss of the Leigh fishing boat, The Renown, the Service took place on the first day of this month and was host to many people paying their respects to the many brave men who have changed many lives for the better, aiding the evacuation of allied soldiers from Dunkirk beaches in 1940.

Heroes particularly hailed at the Service were those from Leigh, who rescued troops from the beaches in small boats and fishing vessels, namely The Letitia, The Endeavour, The Resolute, The Reliant, The Defender and The Renown.

The Renown sadly tripped a mine on her escape, however, tragically killing the crew of four aboard at the time.

The Dunkirk Memorial Service fondly remembered the men comprising this crew: Frank Osborne, Harry Osborne, Harry Noakes and Harold Graham Porter. A part of the tribute included a recital of the poem, ‘The Day of the Little Ships’ by Cicely Fox Smith, read by Lisa Smith as she lovingly remembered her two great uncles, Frankie and Lukie (Harry) Osborne.

After the service, MP Sir David Amess said: “It was an honour to attend this poignant service today to honour the brave men of Leigh, who took their boats to the beaches of Northern France as part of the Dunkirk evacuation. These men showed immense courage and we owe them a great debt of gratitude.”
