50th anniversary for Leigh bakery Posted On 24 September 2021

Leigh—based Home Made Bakery has this year reached its 50th Anniversary, and the family of bakers are sharing their origin story of which they are so proud

Ken and Aileen Flanagan both foundered the bakery 50 years ago. They both met in London on Coronation Day, and married soon afterwards. When Mr Flanagan left the Merchant Navy working as a chef, he was finally able to pursue his life-long dream: to own his very own bakery. Whist in the Navy he spent his time learning his craft in different areas, including working as a pastry chef, baker, and bakery manager. And when 1971 arrived, so did his ability to open Home Made Bakery in Leigh.

Ken and Aileen have regretfully since passed away, with their children and other family members are keen to keep the business and its history alive, as the Home Made Bakery has now become a part of Leigh’s heritage.

Throughout the bakery’s reign, there have been two bread strikes, along with the global COVID-19 pandemic, which it’s had to deal with, but it’s proved itself in glistening fashion throughout these hard times, and it’s still growing, with three branches in three locations: Leigh, Thorpe Bay and Eastwood.

Karen Dann, Managing Director of The Home Made Bakery, has said: “We have been truly blessed over the years with our staff and customers, without whom we certainly wouldn’t be here now, but overall, our passion for what we do and the love we have for each other as a family has made us get where we are today. We still hand make and bake most of our products on site and in a lot of cases still use original machinery and floor standing mixers, some of which are nearly 100 years old.”
